The Benefits of a Bike Shed in the Workplace
The bicycle isn’t exactly new. Invented in the 1960’s, bicycles have been a staple part of people’s lives for many years, not only as a mode of transport, but also as a way of keeping healthy. In modern times like today, it can be so simple for people to just hop in their car or on a bus to get to work and back. However with the current trend of people trying to enhance their lives and their lifespan, a lot more people are deciding to ride to work. This makes sense because if you’re a regular nine to fiver, not only will you be getting to work for free every day, you will also be getting some crucial exercise that will help you to stay in shape.
Bicycles can be bought for relatively cheap; especially second hand ones as these can be bought online for as low as £30! They are also a lot easier to maintain than a car as all you will need is some oil for the chain every now and again, and a puncture kit with the occasional replacement tyres. While you may be willing to ride to work, sometimes your workplace doesn’t have the facilities to accommodate your bicycle. It is important for employers to do all they can to encourage healthy living with their employees and having a bike shed can be a great step to a better workplace. An employee who has just rode into work is a lot likelier to be more awake and ready to get on with work than one that has just sat on a train to get there.
As an employer, a great way to get employees cycling to work is the cycle to work scheme introduced by the government in which the employer buys the bike of the employees choosing and the employee rents the bike for a year, paying for it out of their gross salary. Eventually after this lending period, the bike can then be bought from the employer at an extremely reduced cost because you pay less income tax and National Insurance. If the employee doesn’t want to purchase the bike, it can be lent out to a different employee on the same scheme.
Encouraging cycling to work is a great initiative but without a bike shed, a lot of people may not feel their bike is safe chained to a gate outside. Bike theft isn’t uncommon as bikes can be expensive and without proper security, it can make easy money for a thief with bolt cutters.
